I’ve lived in my house for more than thirty years and I have not been tempted to move until I saw Greg Leding was running for the Arkansas House of Representatives.

I am not in his district, but I have known Leding since he was in my third grade class in Springdale. He is the most creative student I have taught in 38 years. He is caring, honest, intelligent, hardworking and a very good listener.

If you live in his voting district, you are very fortunate. If you give him the chance to represent you, he will work hard on your behalf and you will be proud of him. Leding is a candidate for House District 92. I wish I could vote for him.

One of the best things you can do—other than to vote early at the Washington County Courthouse (click here for days and hours) is to send an email to your friends encouraging them to vote for our campaign. Pick up the phone, post links to your Facebook wall, go knock on your neighbor’s door; each act makes a big difference. FAYETTEVILLE — Former State Rep. J. W. “Bill” Ramsey says his experience will let him “hit the ground running” at the state Legislature while Greg Leding says he’s more in touch with Fayetteville’s “progressive” voters.

The two candidates for state representative in District 92 squared off Friday in a debate hosted by the Washington County League of Women voters in Fayetteville. The race will be determined in the May 18 Democratic primary because no GOP candidates filed.

The District 92 House seat is held by Rep. Lindsley Smith, D-Fayetteville, who can't run for re-election because of term limits. The district covers a large portion of Fayetteville, including the downtown area. Smith backs Leding.

Leding, 32, said when Ramsey retired from the House “no one had cell phones” and today’s freshmen at the University of Arkansas were not even born yet. “Learning on the job is essential” in today’s modern world, Leding argued. He called himself a “strong voice to progressive beliefs — a full-throated advocate.”

During his closing remarks, Leding attacked Ramsey’s voting record in the House as conservative. Ramsey voted against the Equal Rights Amendment four times and also voted for a bill requiring balanced treatment in public school of both evolution and creation science, or teaching the world was created by a deity, he said.

Ramsey said he will support the Equal Right Amendment now, but in the 1970s his rural, conservative constituents were “very much opposed it.” When the so-called Creation Science Bill came before the House on the last day of the session in 1981, he voted for it because his many of his constituents asked him to.

The full debate will air on Fayetteville’s government channel at 2:00 PM Thursday, April 29; 2:00 PM Friday, April 30; and at 8:00 AM Saturday, May 1.

Remind others. Make sure friends, family members, and colleagues know about their early voting options. Make sure they know that election day is May 18. And make sure they know how important this race is.

First, if you’re not yet registered to vote, it’s too late to register to vote in the primary. (You can still register to vote in the general election in November.) To confirm whether you’re registered, visit the Arkansas Secretary of State’s Voter View site here.

If you wish to vote early, you must do so at the Washington County Courthouse at the corner of College Avenue and Dickson Street in Fayetteville. You can vote between the hours of 8:00 AM and 6:00 PM Monday through Friday. If you can’t make it during the week, you can vote on Saturday, May 8, and Saturday, May 15, between the hours of 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM. (You can find the hours and additional information on the Washington County Election Commission site here.

The election is set for Tuesday, May 18. Polls will be open between the hours of 7:30 AM and 7:30 PM. If you vote May 18, you will need to vote at your polling place.
