International Women’s Day

International Women's Day

Today, March 8, is International Women’s Day, a global day set aside to celebrate the contributions and achievements of women around the world. Many countries—including China, Russia, and Vietnam—celebrate International Women’s Day as a national holiday. Regrettably, the day receives little attention in the US.

You can learn much more about the history of International Women’s Day here.

Take at least a moment today to consider these facts: Women working in the US earn about $0.76 to every $1.00 earned by men. Women hold only 13 percent of the top executive positions in our country. Conservatives opposed to reforming our country’s health care system say they don’t want the government making health-related decisions for the American people—except of course when it comes to women’s reproductive rights.

We have a lot of work to do. When you go to the polls on Tuesday, May 18, make sure you know where your candidates stand on issues like the Equal Rights Amendment, pay equity, and other gender issues.

Raise a Glass to Going Green

Going Green

Join us St. Patrick’s day—Wednesday, March 17— at 5:30 at Crown Pub on Dickson Street for a few drinks and informal discussion on sustainability, our state’s growing green economy, and other ecological matters.

If you’re on Facebook, you can learn more here.

You can always learn more about issues on our Issues page.

And while we have you: Don’t forget our fundraiser and reception at the home of Dr. Stephen and Rep. Lindsley Smith (D-AR92) set for Sunday, March 14, from 3:00 to 5:00. Again, if you’re on Facebook, you can learn more here.

We’ busy planning other events for the coming weeks, so make sure to check back for updates.

In a document obtained by Politico, the Republican National Committee openly mocks its own donors while outlining its 2010 plans to raise money and drive voters to the polls through fear.

You can take a look at the entire 72-page presentation here (PDF).

The presentation was delivered on February 18 at a $2,500-a-head retreat in Boca Grande, Florida. The presentation includes imagery that compares President Obama to The Joker; Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi to Cruella DeVille; and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to Scooby-Doo.

"What can you sell when you do not have the White House, the House, or the Senate?" the presentation asks. The answer: "Save the country from trending toward socialism!"

The RNC presentation goes on to discuss "visceral" giving—contributions from those who give out of fear—and "calculated' giving—contributions made by wealthier, "ego-driven" individuals.

This is what Democrats face this year: aggressive, fear-stoking tactics from a party with little to lose; a party currently demanding compromise and bipartisanship.

Remember to vote Tuesday, May 18.

It’s Official

On Monday, March 1, I traveled down to Little Rock with my dad to file the paperwork necessary to put my name on the ballot for the primary set for Tuesday, May 18. We couldn’t have come this far without the support of our terrific supporters. Thank you.

Having never gone through the experience before, I can tell you it was something to see. More than 150 candidates filed the first day, including Rep. John Boozman (R-AR), Sen. Blanche Lincoln (D-AR), and David Whitaker, Democratic candidate for the Third District. Candidates, their families, and their supporters filled the Capitol. The event made for some fantastic people-watching.

Secretary of State Charlie Daniels' office is tweeting each candidate’s filing. You can follow the action at twitter.com/arsecofstate.

The filing window closes Monday, March 8, at which point the field will be set. The primary is set for Tuesday, May 18—just seventy-seven days from today.

Once again, we couldn’t have made it this far without our supporters. Thank you. We now need you more than ever. Learn more about how you can help our campaign. With your help, we can win on May 18, and together we can make Arkansas stronger.

After a busy week, we finally had time to post a selection of photos from our campaign fundraiser and reception at ddp gallery on Monday, February 22. You can find a selection on both our Facebook page and our Flickr page.

Sincere thanks to everyone for making the event success, and special thanks to photographer Stephen Ironside (www.ironsidephotography.com) for the terrific photos of the event.

Remember: If you’re ever at an event, and you take a picture you’d like to share, you can always submit it through our Tumblr. We’ll make sure to credit you if we post your photo.
